Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
